Board President

Carl Herr, chair of the board of the Alexandre Community Foundation, is a writer and poet and an advocate for people with disabilities. He has worked in systems advocacy for people with disabilities, worked to enhance the capacity of individuals with disabilities, and worked to improve services available to people with disabilities. Mr. Herr has specialized in representing people with disabilities in Social Security hearings so they are can obtain their full benefits without paying for an attorney. He has arranged literary readings for people with disabilities and encouraged people with disabilities to advocate for themselves to increase their level of independence at home, in the community, and in educational and public environments.

Mr. Herr’s poetry and photography have been published in such literary magazines as Struggle, Schmaga, The Musing Place and Lucid Moon. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his work with the disability community, including the Bienstock and Dick Gelman awards. He graduated from Queens College with a degree in sociology.
